Corbin Creek Canyon

Unverified community beta. Not yet field-checked by the stewardship team. Summarized from RopeWiki — read the live page before relying on this.

A Western NC mega-classic — ten rappels in half a mile, big cliffs, and a rapid-fire pace that leaves little room to rest. Recent landslide damage has compromised two anchors; check the current RopeWiki thread before you commit.

Corbin Creek drops 600 feet in about half a mile — ten rappels back to back, with the two longest (R5 and R7) going 100 feet each. There’s little flat ground to regroup on; this is a canyon that rewards a team that already has its changeover routine dialed in.

Hazards

  • Rated for swift water — several rappels land you directly in moving current.
  • As of 2026, this stretch has significant landslide damage. R4’s original anchor is no longer usable and needs adaptive rigging around downed trees; R10’s primary tree anchor has fallen, and the backup repositions the rope line. Read the live RopeWiki page before you go — this kind of damage gets updated there as crews check it.
  • Multiple committing sections where escape isn’t realistic once you’re in.

Anchors

Most stations use rhododendron, boulders, logs, or trees. R4 and R10 are the two to plan around given the recent damage noted above — bring backup material and don’t assume the anchor described in an older trip report still matches what’s there now.
